A Full Circle Moment for a Young Cattleman

Rosie and her calf

Exhibiting livestock gives young people far more than banners and buckles — it teaches responsibility, financial awareness, and what it truly means to care for another living creature. Few stories capture that better than the journey of Major County 4‑H member Andrew Sproul.

In March 2025, 12‑year‑old Andrew was preparing to show his heavy‑bred Shorthorn heifer, Rosey, at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Rosey surprised everyone by calving at the show. Once the dust settled, Rosey was doing well and proving to be a devoted mama. Andrew and his family quickly came up with a game plan so Rosey could still make her debut in the show ring — without compromising her new responsibilities. Andrew proudly led Rosey while her newborn calf, Rosebud, rode beside them in a small cart. Rosey won her class and chosen as a division winner, a notable accomplishment at OYE especially after just giving birth.

Fast forward to 2026, and that tiny calf in the cart has become something truly special. Andrew exhibited Rosebud at the Northwest District Livestock Show in Enid, where she was named Supreme Bred‑and‑Owned Female and Breed Champion Shorthorn Heifer. Then, on her second trip to OYE, Rosebud earned the title of Grand Champion Shorthorn Heifer — an impressive accomplishment for a yearling. She was also selected as Champion Shorthorn Bred and Owned Heifer at OYE.

Now 13, Andrew knows just how remarkable Rosebud is. He’s already looking forward to exhibiting her again next spring, saying, “Rosebud might be the only heifer to ever go to OYE three times.” And he may be right.

This story is made even sweeter by the fact that Rosey’s breeder, the Sproul family’s neighbor Jeff Bedwell, has been cheering just as loudly as anyone. He’s proud of Rosey, proud of Rosebud, and proud of the young cattleman who has cared for them both.

Moments like these remind us what a blessing it is to raise kids immersed in agriculture — where hard work, stewardship, and unforgettable experiences shape them into capable young adults.

Andrew is the son of Andrew and Jennifer Sproul of Isabella, Oklahoma, proud Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma customers. Congratulations young man!
